Description
The IANA evolution program’s primary focus is the stewardship over the IANA functions for the Internet in General and the IETF in particular.
Its main focus is on:
- the inter-dependencies and relations between ICANN, the IETF and the DoC/NTIA
- the IANA MoU (RFC2860);
- the development of a vision with respect to the future of the IANA functions; and
- implementation and interpretation of the above.
The program acts as a think-tank and advises the IAB on strategic and liaison issues.
In some cases this group may provide guidance and insight on matters relating ICANN, IANA, and related governance in general.
The group is not responsible for daily operational guidance and oversight, such as review of the SLA between the IETF and ICANN. A separate IETF ‘ietf-iana‘ committee exists for that. We have a one page document describing the responsibilities of that group.
Activities
The group advised the IAB on:
- In collaboration with the internationalization-program: “IAB Statement: “The interpretation of rules in the ICANN gTLD Applicant Guidebook.”” (Feb 8, 2012)
- RFC 6220: “Defining the Role and Function of IETF Protocol Parameter Registry Operators”
- The response (doc|pdf) to the US Dept. of Commerce NOI on the IANA function (March 30, 2011)
- The response to a request from the ARIN board for guidance regarding draft policy ARIN-2011-5 (June 2011)
- The response to the Further Notice of Inquiry from the US DOC on the IANA function. (July 2011)
- The questionnaire that was submitted to NTIA supporting the ICANN bid as part of the NTIA RFP for the IANA contract (Solicitation Number: SA1301-12-RP-IANA) (December 2011)
