Revised draft - Guidelines for Acting as an IETF Liaison to Another Organization

The IAB has revised its draft document on "Guidelines for Acting as an IETF Liaison to Another Organization."
Whenever IETF decides to enter into a liaison relationhsip with
another organization, e.g. a Standards Development Organization, a
consortium, or an industrial forum, a liaison manger is appointed.
The procedures used by the IAB to establish and maintain liaison
relationships between the IETF and other organizations are described
in RFC 4052 [RFC4052]. This document give guidelines on
expectations, tasks, responsibilities and mandate of the liaisons
managers.

Revised draft - Review and Recommendations for Internationalized Domain Names (IDN)

The IAB has revised its draft document on "Review and Recommendations for Internationalized Domain Names (IDN)."
This note describes issues raised by the deployment and use of
Internationalized Domain Names. It describes problems both at the
time of registration and those for use of those names for use in the
DNS. It recommends that IETF should update the IDN related RFCs and
a framework to be followed in doing so, as well as summarizing and
identifying some work that is required outside the IETF. In
particular, it proposes that some changes be investigated for the
IDNA standard and its supporting tables, based on experience gained
since those standards were completed.

Release RFC - Report of the 2004 IAB Messaging Workshop

The RFC Editor has released RFC 4417 (Informational) on "Report of the 2004 IAB Messaging Workshop."
This document reports the outcome of a workshop held by the Internet
Architecture Board (IAB) on the future of Internet messaging. The
workshop was held on 6 and 7 October 2004 in Burlingame, CA, USA.
The goal of the workshop was to examine the current state of
different messaging technologies on the Internet (including, but not
limited to, electronic mail, instant messaging, and voice messaging),
to look at their commonalities and differences, and to find
engineering, research, and architectural topics on which future work
could be done. This report summarizes the discussions and
conclusions of the workshop and of the IAB.

Mechanisms." Authentication is a common security issue for the design
of Internet protocols. A wide variety of authentication technologies
are avail- able. A common problem is knowing which technology to
choose or which of a variety of essentially similar implementations of
a given tech- nique to choose. This memo provides a survey of
available mechanisms and guidance on selecting one for a given
protocol.

Release RFC - What's in a Name: False Assumptions about DNS Names

The RFC Editor has released RFC 4367 (Informational) on "What's in a Name: False Assumptions about DNS Names."
The Domain Name System (DNS) provides an essential service on the
Internet, mapping structured names to a variety of data, usually IP
addresses. These names appear in email addresses, Uniform Resource
Identifiers (URIs), and other application-layer identifiers that are
often rendered to human users. Because of this, there has been a
strong demand to acquire names that have significance to people,
through equivalence to registered trademarks, company names, types of
services, and so on. There is a danger in this trend; the humans and
automata that consume and use such names will associate specific
semantics with some names and thereby make assumptions about the
services that are, or should be, provided by the hosts associated
with the names. Those assumptions can often be false, resulting in a
variety of failure conditions. This document discusses this problem
in more detail and makes recommendations on how it can be avoided.

The IAB has noted an apparent need to appoint an additional IETF
liaison representative to IEEE 802 (specifically to IEEE 802.1) to

interest. We have not found an immediately apparent candidate, and
are therefore looking for suggestions.
We would like to receive your comments and suggestions by February 15th

As such, it is not suggesting process or structure changes at this time, and is primarily intended to capture IAB state. Comments are therefore most likely to be of the form of suggestions for improving clarity. The IAB solicits comments by December 14, 2005. Please send comments to the IAB (iab@iab.org), or to ietf@ietf.org.

Revised draft - A Survey of Authentication Mechanisms

The IAB has revised its draft document on "A Survey of Authentication
Mechanisms." Authentication is a common security issue for the design
of Internet protocols. A wide variety of authentication technologies
are avail- able. A common problem is knowing which technology to
choose or which of a variety of essentially similar implementations of
a given tech- nique to choose. This memo provides a survey of
available mechanisms and guidance on selecting one for a given
protocol.

Revised draft - Internet Denial of Service Considerations

The IAB has revised its draft document on "Internet Denial of Service
Considerations." This document provides an overview of possible
avenues for denial-of-service attack on Internet systems. The aim is
to encourage protocol designers and network engineers towards designs
that are more robust. We discuss partial solutions that reduce the
effectiveness of attacks, and how some solutions might inadvertently
open up alternative vulnerabilities.

OMA New Work - 1 New Work Item Approved

Experience shows that permanent ownership, portability and sharing
(within certain limits) of protected digital content are important
features to end-users. In order to satisfy these customer
requirements, service and content providers should have the
possibility to provide their customers with the quoted features if
they wish to do so. The scope of this work item is to identify
requirements and develop additional technologies to enable the use of
secure removable media with OMA DRM compliant devices. To enable the
OMA DRM based secure removable media, technologies such as
device-to-device authentication, revocation status checking before
engaging in the transfer of DRM protected content, etc. may be
required. New requirement document also will be developed.

Publish draft - What's in a Name: False Assumptions about DNS Names

The IAB has asked the RFC Editor to publish as an Informational RFC
its draft document on "What's in a Name: False Assumptions about DNS
Names." The Domain Name System (DNS) provides an essential service on
the Internet, mapping structured names to a variety of data, usually
IP addresses. These names appear in email addresses, URIs, and other
application layer identifiers that are often rendered to human users.
Because of this, there has been a strong demand to acquire names that
have significance to people, through equivalence to registered
trademarks, company names, types of services, and so on. There is a
danger in this trend; the humans and automata that consume and use
such names will associate specific semantics with some names and
thereby make assumptions about the services that are, or should be,
provided by the hosts associated with the names. Those assumptions
can often be false, resulting in a variety of failure conditions.
This document discusses this problem in more detail and makes
recommendations on how it can be avoided.

Burlingame, CA, USA. The goal of the workshop was to examine the
current state of different messaging technologies on the Internet
(including, but not limited to, electronic mail, instant messaging,
and voice messaging), look at their commonalities and differences, and
find engineering, research, and architectural topics on which future
work could be done. This report summarizes the discussions and

draft-iab-dns-assumptions: What's in a Name: False Assumptions about DNS Names

Internet, mapping structured names to a variety of data, usually IP
addresses. These names appear in email addresses, URIs, and other
application layer identifiers that are often rendered to human users.
Because of this, there has been a strong demand to acquire names that
have significance to people, through equivalence to registered
trademarks, company names, types of services, and so on. A danger of
this trend is that the humans and automata which consume and use
these identifiers will make assumptions about the services that are
or should be provided by the hosts associated with these identifiers.
This document discusses this problem in more detail and makes
recommendations on how it can be avoided.

This document describes a joint recommendation of the Internet
Architecture Board and the Internet Engineering Steering Group for
administrative restructuring of the Internet Engineering Task Force.
This recommendation will be discussed on the IETF list
(ietf@ietf.org), and the IETF leadership will attempt to determine if
there is IETF consensus in going forward with this plan through a
 Last Call process.

draft-iab-link-indications: Architectural Implications of Link Layer Indications

As a performance optimization, proposals have been made for utilizing
link layer indications (also known as "triggers" or "hints") to
influence the behavior of the Internet, Transport or Application
layers. This document briefly summarizes current proposals and
describes architectural issues relating to link layer indications.

draft-iab-dns-choices-00.txt: Design Choices When Expanding DNS

This note discusses how to extend the DNS with new data for a new
application. DNS extension discussion too often circulate around
reuse of the TXT record. This document lists different mechanisms to
accomplish the extension to DNS, and comes to the conclusion use of a
new RR Type is the best solution.

draft-iab-model: Writing Protocol Models

The IETF process depends on peer review. However, IETF documents
are generally written to be useful for implementors, not for
reviewers. In particular, while great care is generally taken to
provide a complete description of the state machines and bits on
the wire, this level of detail tends to get in the way of initial
understanding. This document describes an approach for providing
protocol "models" that allow reviewers to quickly grasp the essence
 of a system.
